W wê¿szym zakresie popem nazywa siê bardziej "miêkki" i nastawiony na masowego odbiorcê od³am muzyki rockowej, charakteryzuj¹cy siê prostot¹, melodyjnoœci¹ i szerszym ni¿ w klasycznej muzyce rockowej u¿yciem syntezatorów i studyjnych technik nagraniowych. Czêsto style popowe s¹ "³agodniejszymi" odmianami pierwotnych stylów wyros³ych z ró¿nych odmian muzyki rozrywkowej (nie tylko rockowej), lub kombinacjami tych odmian tak zestawianymi, aby usun¹æ brzmienia nie tolerowane w danym momencie przez wiêkszoœæ potencjalnych s³uchaczy, oraz aby zachowaæ brzmienia, które s¹ aktualnie modne.
